Memories by the Sea
In the southwestern corner of Johor, Malaysia, a quiet river flows into the strait. At its mouth lived fishermen whose days rose and fell with the tide — out to sea at high water, home again at low.
This is not a history textbook, but a story still remembered today. Every inch of this coastline carries the trace of one man's name.
Follow the sound of the waves, and step into the deep memory of old Pontian.
Places That Have Disappeared
In the memory of the older generation, the Pontian coast once had names you won't find on any map today. Tap one to hear what it used to be.
From Zhao'an, Fujian to Pontian
Mr. Goh Ah Heng's story begins far away in Zhao'an, Fujian, China. Crossing the winds and waves of the South China Sea, he eventually put down roots at the mouth of the Pontian Kechil River.

Life by the River Mouth
Wooden houses stood side by side at the river mouth, almost level with the water at high tide. Boats came ashore, nets dried between bamboo poles, and seabirds skimmed low over the rooftops.
Life was hard, but steady. Each day's catch decided whether the village could make it safely through to the next season.
The Birth of the "Fish-Head Boss"
Mr. Goh Ah Heng saw the fishermen's struggle: going to sea required boats, nets, and capital, yet help was often nowhere to be found. So he founded the "fish-head boss" system — the fishermen supplied the labor, he supplied the capital, and they shared the catch.
It was more than a business. It was the start of trust.
Helping Fishermen
How did a fisherman with no capital of his own, step by step, build a stable life for his family — on nothing but Mr. Goh Ah Heng's trust?
No Capital
Borrow a Boat
Borrow Nets
Go to Sea
Catch Fish
Sell the Catch
Repay the Cost
Steady Family Income
A Coastline in Danger
The sky grew darker, and the waves grew fiercer by the day. Inch by inch, the sea swallowed the sandy shore, and the houses' foundations began to shake.
For the first time, the fishermen looked out at the sea with fear — the land they depended on for their livelihood was disappearing.
Building a Seawall with His Own Money
Facing the advancing waves, Mr. Goh Ah Heng made a decision: not to wait, not to ask for help, but to fund it himself and build a line of defense for this coast.
An Extraordinary Project
Boatload after boatload of coconut husks were packed into the sea; layer after layer of sand and stone were piled up to hold the shoreline. This was land one man won back from the sea, with his own two hands.
A Jetty for the Fishermen
With the seawall holding the coast steady, the jetty reached further and further out to sea. Boat after boat came ashore, and the catch finally had a safe place to land.
Little by little, the jetty took on a life of its own.
A Place That Became "Wu Ya Xing"
Twelve houses went up along the new jetty, and fishing families settled in one after another. Children played in the shallows, women dried fish outside their doors, and the cooking smoke of many homes drifted together as one.
Over time, people stopped saying "that fishing village at the river mouth" and simply said — "Wu Ya Xing." One man's name became the name of an entire stretch of land.
Memories Will Never Fade
Memories will never fade — as long as someone is still willing to tell them, they will go on living on this coast.
